You Might Not Be Good at It, but What if It’s Good For You?

How many times have you told yourself you can’t do something before you even tried? How many times have you envied people with special talents, ones you’ve always wanted but don’t seem to have, or decided you are lacking something essential to succeed at whatever it is you secretly wish to try?

Most adults have a broken relationship with learning. We settle into our daily routines, choose interests based on what they can offer us often in terms of money or status, and only engage with what we determine productive or practical.

Maybe Peter Pan had a point when he decided he never wanted to grow up. If growing up means giving up on curiosity, play, imagination, and the joy of trying new things, why would anyone want to do it?

One adult behavior that is actually a manifestation of immaturity is only engaging with what we think we will be good at. We may do this out of fear of embarrassment or because we have forgotten what it feels like to move from beginner to intermediate to expert with patience and grace.

We may do this because at some point, however long ago, someone told us we weren’t good enough and we believed them. We forgot that not everything is about being…
